Forest Gate Festival

Forest Gate Festival This Weekend

festival facebook cover

This weekend we make our debut at the Forest Gate Festival, the annual street fest in Osborne Road, E7 that is now in its fifteenth year. Weather permitting, we’ll be setting up the decks and (small) PA outside from 11am as we bring the local crowd an assortment of sights, sounds and selectors all day. Signed up for the day session so far are Dig A Little residents Digger Dan and Rob Coley who are joined by special guests Gary’s Gardens and Terry Benjamin while we’ve managed to tempt our sometime reggae don Gabs out of his house too. It’s not just all about us however, the event is organised for the community with plenty of other things around to be enjoyed. There’s reportedly around 90 stalls signed up for the stretch, with an abundance of food and drink, vinyl(!), art, children’s goods, antiques and books all available to peruse and purchase on the day. As well as our humble corner, there will also be a larger stage featuring music from a host of local artists as well as a rumoured Samba Parade, street theatre, climbing wall, bouncy castle and various other arts and crafts.

In the evening we’ll be moving the system down to the road to the nearby Golden Fleece on Capel Road for a little post festival carry on. Running 7pm till 10pm in the pub’s garden (again weather permitting), Dan, Rob and Gary will be pulling out a Saturday night vinyl only selection for the Manor Park revellers! If you’re in the area, feel free to pop by either session!

Dig A Little NW1 at The Forge

Announcing… Dig A Little NW1 at The Forge

Dig A Little NW1 at The Forge

A day for Jazz enthusiasts and diggers alike as the Dig A Little crew head north for a very special extended session of our pop up record fair and live music event.

Taking the formula that was born in Forest Gate, E7 and has since spread to venues around South London and beyond, we present a North London Dig for those that like to peruse and purchase second hand vinyl in the historical musical mecca that is Camden Town at the exciting Forge Music and Arts Venue. Over the course of the day, there will be a variety of crates of pre-owned wax to sift through, with listening stations set up to check them out and time allowed on the decks to play out those more sought after gems.

In the evening from 5.30pm, the crates are packed away and we present two sessions of live Jazz from Ms Jessica Lauren and band while DJ Nik Weston (Mukatsuku Records) plays a suitably eclectic Jazz and Latin friendly soundtrack direct from the DJ box.

Entry is FREE all day and we welcome record dealers and collectors who might have a box or two of vinyl squirreled away and ready for sale on the day. As always at our events, table space is free and there’s absolutely no hidden charges. Simply turn up and sell or trade those tunes!

Revolutions at The Forest Tavern

It’s that time of the month again as the Dig A Little residents take control of the Forest Tavern decks once again tomorrow for a Friday night soiree in Forest Gate. This month it’s Digger Dan who’s pulled the golden ticket, so you can expect all manner of musical treats to be on the menu. A spot of funk, a soupçon of soul, some disco and library finds, as well as the odd classic thrown in to keep things fresh (it is a Friday night after all!). We hope you can join us.

Dig A Little Jazz? at The Forest Tavern

Live Jazz and vinyl this weekend at The Tavern

Dig A Little Jazz? at The Forest Tavern

As autumn arrives and the nights draw in, there’s nothing better than relaxing in a cosy pub with a nice pint and listening to some great music – that’s why we’re extending our programming at the Forest Tavern this week and incorporating a little live Jazz into the mix. Tentatively titled ‘Dig A Little Jazz?’ for the launch this Sunday 12th October, the event pairs live music from a rotating house band and special guests with DJ sets from the Dig A Little DJs who each know a thing or two about Jazz it seems. For this first event we welcome Ms Jessica Lauren and Jason Simpson into the fray, both of whom will be inviting some friends along for a night of soulful and funky live Jazz.

Jessica is an accomplished keyboard player having been a mainstay on the London jazz scene since the early days of London’s Acid Jazz age. She has recently released a quartet album entitled ‘Jessica Lauren Four’ which was well received across the board and ended up featuring on many end of year lists. Jason is a very much in-demand bass player who having finished his studies at London’s Guildhall School of Music and Drama, now holds down the bassist’s chair in a variety of bands across London. Both musicians have spent some time playing together as integral parts of the Jazz Meet house band and for the 12th, they will be joined by a selection of guests who will be dropping in to provide their own takes on some classic Jazz grooves. As much as it is a performance, it’s also an invited jam session, so if you’re local and have some knowledge of the expanded Jazz canon, feel free to bring your instrument and step up for a tune or two!

Between the band sets this month, Dig A Little DJ Rob Coley will be picking some of his favourite Jazz tracks past and present to keep the mood bubbling throughout the night. Expect to hear a mixed bag of jazz funk, hard bop, soul Jazz and Latin influenced compositions. The session starts at 6pm sharp with the first band set planned for 7.30pm. Entry is free all night, although it is appreciated if you order a few drinks while we’re all there or enjoy a tasty Tavern roast before 7pm!

For those of you out and about on Friday we also have our monthly Revolutions night, this month hosted by Digger Dan. As we’ve all come to expect from the man himself, Dan will be taking a vinyl-only excursion into the finer moments of Soul, Jazz, funk, disco and soundtracks while also visiting those important points in between. So whether it’s a funky Friday soundtrack you’re seeking, or a not so laid back Sunday night jazz soiree, this weekend here at Dig A Little we’ve got you covered.

Dig A Little presents Revolutions

It’s a big night for the Forest Tavern this Friday as they celebrate their first birthday with an evening of speakeasy jazz vibes with live music from The Boneshakers. Thankfully they haven’t forgotten about us however and there’s no man better suited to follow an evening dedicated to the Jazz Age than Mr Sid Ford. He’ll be taking over the turntables from 11pm until the early hours of the morning (thanks to a late licence) to bring you some tough selections on a jazz, soul and funk tip. We hope you can join us!

Dig A Little at Forest Tavern

We’re back at the Tavern this Saturday

Dig A Little at Forest TavernAfter a little August break and little trips to Eltham and London Fields, we’re back within the familiar confines of the Forest Tavern, E7 for our regular afternoon of selling, buying and swapping records this Saturday. This month, aside from the usual crew of sellers we’ve come to love as much as our own, it gives us great pleasure to have Russell Gutter Snypes AKA DJ Sigher join us. Russ will spinning some of his favourite soul choices on the communal decks and will maybe have a few nuggets to trade and sell too. Check out a little introductory video to the man himself below (it’s good, honest… otherwise we wouldn’t have included it!). Fancy getting involved? Well for those of you on the dreaded Facebook, here’s a link. You’ll need to leave your house though to buy the records!

THIS MONTH’S FIRST LISTEN

Between 12pm and 1pm, we’ll also be previewing a very tasty new jazz album on the house system. It’s by a new band called Collocutor and it’s already received major props from the likes of Gilles Peterson, Patrick Forge, Dom Servini and Matthew Halsall. It’s available from October 6th on vinyl via On The Corner Records and on Saturday, the Tavern will be one of the only places you can hear the album in full prior to its full release. In the meantime, you can hear a snippet of one of our favourite tracks ‘Agama’ below.

BUT I LIVE IN SOUTH LONDON!

That’s OK, we still love you and that’s exactly why we will be doing a second Eltham Dig at the Eltham GPO sometime in October. We need to get a few of our ducks back in a row for that one so keep your eyes peeled for further info nearer the time. We’re always keen on meeting new sellers and buyers who might be situated in that neck of the woods, so please feel free to point them in our direction and if you wish, spread the word about our little initiative. There might even be a pint in it for you!
